How You Can Help
As the family or friend of someone with bipolar depression, you can help in their treatment. Some ways you might help include:- Learn more about the illness and how treatment can help. Start by reading the section Recognizing Bipolar Depression on this site or by visiting www.bipolarhelpcenter.com.
- Know the signs that your loved one is having a manic or depressive episode.
- Work with your loved one when he or she is stable to plan what to do when an episode arises:
- Help your loved one stick with the treatment plan.
- Encourage them to avoid alcohol and street drugs.
- Be patient as symptoms of bipolar depression occur; however, call the doctor, 911 or the hospital immediately if your loved one shows signs of crisis.
- Remove guns from the house to help prevent suicide or violence.
- Participate in family therapy sessions.
- Attend a support group meeting with your loved one.
