Recognizing Suicide Risks
As a loved one of someone with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) or bipolar I disorder, you may someday be called upon to deal with a crisis
situation. Individuals with either of these conditions are at an increased risk for suicide.
TRD or bipolar I depression sufferers can have periods when symptoms can worsen or thoughts of suicide can emerge. These individuals and their
families should watch for these as well as anxiety, agitation, panic, difficulty sleeping, irritability, hostility, aggressiveness, impulsivity,
restlessness or overexcitement, and hyperactivity.
If your loved one feels like giving up or you believe may hurt himself or herself, get help immediately:
- Call your healthcare professional
- Go to the emergency room
- Call 911
- Call the National Suicide Prevention Helpline, 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433)
