How to Help

As the family or friend of someone with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) or bipolar I depression, you can play a key role in your loved one's treatment. Some ways you might help include:

  • Learn more about your loved one's condition.
  • Provide practical and emotional support for your loved one.
    • Ask your loved one what you can do to help.
    • Be there for your friend or family member. Listen when they need to talk.
    • Don't be afraid to do little things to help make his or her life easier, such as making appointments with healthcare professionals and helping with errands.
    • Check in with your loved one to let them know that others are thinking of them. Call them regularly, meet them for coffee or a meal, and encourage them to stick with their treatment.
  • Reinforce why it's important for your loved one to take his or her medication as prescribed by the healthcare professional.
    • If needed, remind your loved one to take the medication and why it is important to do so. Suddenly stopping treatment with an antidepressant, like Symbyax, may result in an increase in side effects.
    • If after starting treatment with an antidepressant, he or she is experiencing side effects or is not feeling better, instruct your loved one to contact his or her healthcare professional.
  • Work with your loved one when he or she is stable to plan what to do when struggles occur:
    • Help your loved one stick with the treatment plan.
    • Encourage him or her to avoid alcohol and street drugs.
    • Be patient as symptoms occur; however, call their healthcare professional, 911 or the hospital immediately if your loved one shows signs of crisis.
    • Participate in family therapy sessions.
    • Attend a support group meeting with your loved one.
