For Friends and Family

Friends and family members play a key role in helping those with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) or bipolar I depression. For someone with these conditions, the love, understanding, and support they receive from their caregivers can be vital.

It's essential that caregivers communicate openly with their friend or family member and realize that the mental illness is not his or her fault. It's also not uncommon for those with TRD or bipolar I depression to feel that they are becoming a burden on their family members. He or she is suffering from a very real, treatable illness. It is not a weakness. It is not caused by past events. It cannot be overcome by simply "trying harder."
